Elections

Elections for London Borough of Lambeth Councillors were held on Thursday 2 May 2002.

The election results can be viewed here.

Prior to the elections, we sent this letter to all candidates requesting their support and in particular asking:
  1. Are you committed to keeping the Lido open as a community facility?
  2. Do you feel that swimming at the Lido should have a subsidy from Lambeth, as it does in other Lambeth pools?
We received the following responses (in order of ward name and then candidate last name):

denotes that the candidate was elected.
We have also received a letter from Lord Beaumont of Whitley, Green Party Peer, saying:

Dear BLU Steering Group (or may I call you Blue?)

The Green Party believes that political decision making should be made as closely as possible to the people affected by it. And we therefore welcome your determination to keep the Lido open.

As to who should pay for it if it genuinely can not support itself after all efforts have been made I believe the fact that it provides health giving and challenging leisure activity entitles it to be subsidised by the wider community.

Which, dear Blue, amounts to an answer of "Yes" to both your questions.

Yours verdantly

Tim Beaumont
